Working with 8DIX on Dark Horse by Katy Perry

About a month ago I got a call from Jordan and Luca, 8DIX's directors and chief designers. I was told that 8DIX have been asked to supply Katy Perry's crew with hats for her upcoming Dark Horse video which was going into production at the time.

They had an idea for a cool bandana and t-shirt design featuring a sharp toothed version of the well known ancient-Egyptian eye symbol.

We worked night and day to get it just right and tonight the video came out - what an incredible feeling to see 8DIX work featuring on such a scale. It is really exciting!

The bandana and look - the design is even painted on the big guys' belly!

Integrated design for my dissertation

My dissertation is on the subject of crowd sourced visual art. I have made the choice to produce a printed and bound version of it where each page is designed by a different individual.

Here are some process photos:

I am inviting the crowd to design my dissertation (it's about artists and designers who let the crowd generate content for them)

Today was the first time I let a group take part in the design of my work. The idea behind it is that in order to justify having others generate content for me I have to share the results back with them, give them credit and it seems also do a hell of lot of work!

Work with 8DIX

I have been working for months with Luca Marchetto, a fashion designer, as he created a new clothing brand by the name of 8DIX (pronounced ottodix). The Brand's website is finally online and the first collection 'SYCOPHANT' is featured there.

Everything form the patterns to the red buttons on the trousers is considered and intentional.

Conceptually the collection is completely Marchetto's brain child. It is an amazing experience to work with him and adhere to a visual style so other than my own. Using Luca's sketches, together we acquired, manipulated and produced high resolution, 'cheap' seeming but incredibly considered visuals.
My own moment of pride - that's my hand holding the toilet brush.

Font Aid VI: Aster Affects

Back in November, following hurricane Sandy, The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) released it's 6th calls for contributions for a font that consists of one symbol, the profits from it's sales all going to the red cross.

My submission was of an outstretched palm, and following the font's release I was delighted to discover my design was chosen!

This is the text I added to my submission:

I chose the visual of an outstretched palm as it is what we humans physically use to draw the attention of others. We play most of our games with it and it is our tool for shaping the world. We say 'hi', call to a halt and call for help with it.
