300 words on today
Eliane Glaser
-
Spoke of how the big
corporations and the government (‘elites’ as she puts it) are displaying
apparent vulnerability in such a way that we do not notice what their
true agendas are.
The government is
making cuts to education and in other public sector bodies. Glaser argues that
the money it is trying to save in this way already exists in the hands of 0.1%
of Britain’s population – the richest people.
I felt her examples
were quite one sided – very ‘left wing’ with not much holistic overview.
Later during the
group talk there was a general agreement that her arguments were one sided. She
gave an impression that she had not informed us of different aspects regarding
the subjects she had brought up.
She made me wonder
how much of a culprit to this phenomenon am I. This is because I realised that
until she made these comments I was seriously convinced that both elites
mentioned previously are indeed losing their power.
Evan Davis-
Started off by
proclaiming that Britain’s greatest contribution to the world is the factory.
Davis’s talk focused around the attempt to understand and explain how developed
countries make their money.
Despite the UK’s
apparent lack of imported goods it is still considered as one of the world’s
strongest economies. The lifestyle it’s citizens (especially Londoners) is very
high, so how is this high level maintained?
His argument is that
after a while, affluent countries discover that they don’t have to physically
make all that they design (‘outsource’ mentality). The physical production is
the moved to other countries (Japan in the past, now China) whilst the intellectual
property remains ‘in-house’ to become the affluent country’s export.
Davis pointed out
that amongst other services, higher education is one of the UK’s most successful
export.
His argument was
very well structured, this was made particularly apparent in comparison to the
first speaker’s.

The gesture of writing
As a part of my research for my brief which revolves around the subject of writing I decided to translate the printed version of the brief into Hebrew.
The idea to do this comes largely from Vilém Flusser’s essay ‘The Gesture of Writing'.
In it, Flusser remarks that by translating any piece of writing the meaning of it changes fundamentally.

Appropriate
As a part of a brief called 'Design Bible' - to quote from the brief : 'Your final piece: should be a visual explanation of your chosen belief/motif/maxim/aphorism/rule/commandment/principles of design.'
After a day's workshop we each had to chose a motif that will be the base for our design. I chose the notion that 'Sexy is not appropriate' which, after I decided was not comfortable to work by, boiled down to 'Appropriate'.
The recent passing of a friend made me conscious of death while working on this project, and with that in mind I began contemplating when is death appropriate.
We all must deal with death and it is notoriously undiscriminating.

Greeting card for engagement
We had friends over visiting from Israel this week. To our surprise that involved a marriage proposal (She said yes), and thus a need for a card was created.

What type(face) of city is this?
Here is a result of 2 week long research originating from a 1916 poster showing the original type used by London Underground.
Today at the final crit I showed this double sided poster.
Front |
Back |
This is the first time I worked seriously with a grid and I will forever keep using it!
The back side of the poster contains a phrase from Emma Clarke's Spoof comments for the tube. Clarke is the genuine announcements voice for several of the Underground's lines.
Emma has kindly allowed me to use this for my project - to hear her spoof tube comments please visit www.emmaclarke.com.
The bibliography for the text can also be found on the back.

Chimera WIP
I'm teamed up with the lovely Henrike Dreier for this project.
The aim is to create a teaser for the ebook version of 'Greek Myths' by Robert graves.
Whereas the Harpy is represented as a flying hybrid true to her original description, we have made a decision to have the environment composed out of Cottus's many arms.
Here is a initial concept piece

My soldier memories
The brief asked that we identify something in our culture which is unique. I based this work on my 3 year service in the Israeli army. Even though I am not the only one in our course who served in their countries' armed forces, I found myself almost unique in that I consider it to have been a necessary experience.
I used shoe polish instead of ink and sewed the characters onto the paper with olive green thread.

NMC more work in progress
So I ditched the hand (deemed ugly after Friday's tutorial) for this image and stayed with the urban motif.
I don't know what the specifications are for fonts and logo placement but i'm trying to figure out a possible layout that works in small scale as well.
